Sexy Weakness – The Sexual Power of Emotional Vulnerability

Sexy weakness? What on earth is that? As a man, like millions of others men, I was taught that being vulnerable was bad and a sign of being weak. I was taught women want a man that is strong, stable and "tough" whatever the heck that means. I was taught that you keep your emotions in check and never let anyone see who you really are. Like never. It has taken me decades to unlearn some of this programing. Parts of it were easy and simple to leave behind , other elements took longer and needed more attention and intention. More importantly, women did not feel safe around me, because I didn't feel safe around me or my thoughts. I typically attracted ...

Boyhood – An Inside Look

Last week we watched the incredibly creative film, Boyhood. Along with enjoying the content and acting in the movie, I was impressed with the unique methods used to produce the film, which are outlined below. What struck me was how rare it is to see film or TV accurately or honestly tell the story of teenage boyhood including the experiences of the boy himself. We typically do a fine job of showing what teenage boys do; sports, eating, technology, girls/boys, video games, violence, anger, sex, risky behaviors, etc., but we don't do such a good job of sharing their experiences. We have many classic and not-so-classics books, films and TV shows about girls coming of age and their experiences related to their transitions. Not so much for boys....

Men get a bad rap. If the only thing you knew about men in America came from watching TV, movies and listening to music, you would think all of us are angry, violent, lazy men hanging out on the couch watching sports and playing video games all day. It is absolutely true that a chunk of the American male population fits this description, but not all of us.  Generally speaking, men that try too hard are rarely in the news or make headlines, we are doing what we do with humility and anonymity....

Making College Campus Safe From Sexual Violence

It is not a new topic, or one that makes the news as often as many other forms of violence in our culture, but sexual violence reaches across America with little resistance. It generally takes a scandal at a university for sexual violence on a college campus to make headlines. We know about Drunk college student breaks into business, eats half a box of Hot Pockets, passes out, iPhone 6 Looks Crazy Thin in New Leaked Photos and Kim Kardashian Attacked By Elephant While Taking Selfie, but rarely hear about sexual violence prevention programs or men stepping forward to support the stoppage of sexual violence on college campus across our country. ...
