There are not many common pieces of advice from therapists and counselors, since we have diverse training, backgrounds and experiences, but this list seems accurate. The themes around boundaries/saying "no", protecting yourself, letting go of relationships that are not supporting your growth and peace, are essential and agreed upon generally across the field. Of course, your specific situation and circumstances are important to consider as well.
My favorite piece of advice from therapists and counselors is first on their list, "Feelings are not facts." I wish we would all be able to integrate this nugget of wisdom in our lives!
... Boyhood – An Inside Look
Last week we watched the incredibly creative film, Boyhood. Along with enjoying the content and acting in the movie, I was impressed with the unique methods used to produce the film, which are outlined below. What struck me was how rare it is to see film or TV accurately or honestly tell the story of teenage boyhood including the experiences of the boy himself. We typically do a fine job of showing what teenage boys do; sports, eating, technology, girls/boys, video games, violence, anger, sex, risky behaviors, etc., but we don't do such a good job of sharing their experiences. We do this profusely in the media with teenage girls, most people over the age of twelve can tell you in detail what it is like to be a teenage girl. We have many classic and not-so-classics books, films and TV shows about girls coming of age and their experiences related to their transitions. Not so much for boys....

I recently saw 6 Words You Should Say Today posted on Facebook. I won't lie, when I see a post about an article on Facebook with a very sensational title, I usually disregard it. Something inside of me said, "I need to read this." I am so glad that I did. This is very inspiring and beautifully written article on being a parent, partner, friend and human being....
