11 Reasons Why You Should Never Hide How Weird You Are

As a child, and even more so as a teenager, I was taught in all situations no matter what is happening; you must hide how weird you are. I repeat, you must hide how weird you are! This mindset was supported by the majority of people in my life including school and family, and to a lesser extent, peers.   11 Reasons Why You Should Never Hide How Weird You Are -Providence Holistic Counseling Services - as-soon-as-i-saw-you-i-knew-an-adventure-was-about-to-happen-winnie-the-pooh-quotes ...

A Sober and Healthy Life

I remember in the late 80s and early 90s when AA, NA and all of the 12 step programs first began to gain mainstream popularity and support. At the time, there was almost a sense of hysteria about alcoholics and addicts finding a "new" method to create a sober and healthy life. In a matter of just a few years there were registered 164 different 12-step programs based on the structure and foundation of Alcoholics Anonymous. Soon after that the very popular book Codependent No More by Melody Beattie became a bestseller and it seemed as if everybody was claiming they were now a codependent or somebody in their life was a codependent. Codependency was all the rage. It is funny to think that pretty much everybody was claiming somebody or themselves to be either an alcoholic, addict or codependent, as if these were goals to achieve in life. ...

1 is 2 Many: Men Standing Against Sexual Assault

It is both inspiring and somewhat comical to be putting your focus in the same place as the White House. Pres. Obama and VP Biden have just released a new PSA as part of their, 1 is 2 Many campaign, including famous male actors, The President and Vice President themselves supporting and standing against sexual assault and violence towards women. It is great to see famous men standing up for women. But I can't lie; the first thing that came to my mind was "It's about time!" ...

We all know dating can be very challenging, between the awful blind dates, the people who pretend to be something they aren’t, the awkwardness, the general disappointment and wanting something and not finding, at least not yet. There is also an amazing side to dating too. But do the disappointments outweigh the benefits? My personal and professional experience demonstrates that the benefits do outweigh the disappointments. Can Watching Football Teach Me About Recovery?

There is an addiction treatment method for recovering alcoholics and addicts called Recovery Dynamics. It was created by a practical, wise old alcoholic, with some of the best professionals in the field of recovery. Recovery Dynamics uses the Twelve Steps of Alcoholic Anonymous as a modality for treatment, not just as an afterthought. There are many excellent exercises in the manual; this is one of my favorites for working with groups of addicts and alcoholics....

Spiritual Teachings on Smiling – The Janitor: Part II

“Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.”  Dr. Seuss

I began working with the Urban League of Greater Madison in October of 2003 as a Social Worker serving adolescents' mental, emotional, social, cultural, and academic needs of the student population in Madison, Wisconsin. I loved the work and the kids.

Spiritual Teachings on Smiling and Humility

After being at the school for a little while, I began to build a relationship with one of the janitors. His name is Oscar, and he is a beautiful man born and raised in Costa Rica. He has a dark complexion seen on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rican with a graying beard, sideburns, and short, wavy, balding hair. He typically wears T-shirts with bright colors. Oscar’s brown eyes are full and deep. He moved to the States several years ago as an adult. He is friendly in such a warm and genuine way that it is hard not to want to be around him. His smile beams greater than almost anyone I’ve ever seen, radiating the hallway during casual conversation. Oscar always finds a minute to engage in brief interactions, each filled with his presence and sweetness. ...
